Indonesia: Economy, Environment, and Mining

Date:
Thursday, December 8, 2022
Location:
On-Demand
Duration:
90 minutes

As environmental, social and governance, or ESG, concerns climb to the top of the global agenda, commodity-producing countries like Indonesia are at a crossroads. Despite an abundance of mineral resources, including tin, gold, nickel, cobalt and bauxite, the Indonesian mining sector's contribution to the country's GDP remains relatively small. To boost its economy, Indonesia is moving away from exporting ever larger quantities of raw materials to focusing instead on developing its own downstream industries, from refining its crude oil to penetrating the electric vehicle industry.

This bold strategy is accompanied by the rise of ESG concerns across the commodity space. As banks, insurers, investors and consumers insist on increasingly robust standards across environmental, social, and governance metrics, firms everywhere need to adapt. Long criticized for the impact of its extractive sector, moving downstream would not only help Indonesia create better jobs, improve work environments and increase profit margins, but would also enhance the country's ability to cut carbon emissions to fight climate change.

While ongoing uncertainty surrounding Indonesia's mining policies continues to restrain the interest of foreign investors, the country's strategy to sustainably develop its mining and downstream industries, while adopting globally recognized ESG standards, will help alleviate investors' concerns.

As co-host with the Djakarta Mining Club, S&P Global Market Intelligence cordially invites you to our online event, "Indonesia: Economy, Environment, and Mining" on December 8, 2022. Join us as we discuss the future of Indonesia's mining industry and economy, and ways in which applying ESG principles can help the country nudge this critical sector toward a more sustainable future.
