Looking for ways to diversify income streams, European banks in several countries are deepening the bancassurance model with organic and external growth strategies. Recent changes to the EU regulatory framework also provide tailwinds. In our rating analyses of the benefits and the risks inherent to bancassurers, we consider it prudent to avoid the double counting of capital which can occur in EU bancassurance groups. Indeed, the double leverage of bank capital - not restricted to bancassurance groups – raises several rating challenges.
